Types of Class 7 Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks
There are three main kinds of Class 7 Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks. The rotating telehandler forklift, straight mast forklifts and rotating forklifts are in this category.
Regardless of its type, all rough terrain forklift trucks are designed to handle, as their name suggests, natural rough terrain and disturbed rough terrain typical of construction and military sites. Rough terrain forklift units have better performance and maneuvering options. Safety considerations are taken into account for rough terrain locations with raising loads in difficult environments to keep the operator safe from tipping over. As with all forklift operation, the machine must be in a position to remain stable before lifting, transporting or lowering a load. Stability of ground and knowledge of proper lifting technique is essential for safe operation of rough terrain forklifts.
Straight Mast Forklifts
The straight mast forklift design enables easy transport around rough terrain locations including construction and demolition sites. These forklift trucks provide increased maneuverability and accessibility because it is fitted with big, heavy-duty pneumatic cushion tires. Uneven ground and rough surfaces are no match for pneumatic tires. Most straight mast forklift units have 2WD or 4WD configurations. Even though these machines are better utilized in exterior locations, many straight mast forklifts operate with propane or diesel, enabling them to be used indoors for short timeframes. Straight mast forklifts have a similar lift capacity compared to standard forklift models; ranging from 5K to 36K lbs.
Telehandler or Telescopic Handler Forklifts
Telescopic handler forklifts or telehandlers feature a telescoping boom; hence their name. This telescoping boom allows the forklift truck to pick up and place loads at various distances and lift heights in front of the machine. The operator can achieve enhanced flexibility with better reach during load placement.
Standard telehandler forklift units are long and low. They are designed with two wheels located at the front of the forklift with a different pair of wheels found close to the end of the unit. Mounted at the back of the forklift, the telescopic boom is on a pivot that is located many feet above the forklift frame. The left side of the machine houses the cab and the hydraulic fluid tank and the fuel tank are found opposite to the cab. Along the center of the machine, the engine and transmission can be found inside the frame. This popular design showcases a balanced forklift which is ideal for the machine’s stability with lifting, moving and lowering items.
Telehandler units offer significantly higher lifting heights compared to standard units. High-reach telehandlers can extend their full load capacity to 56 feet. The compact telehandlers can extend their full load capacity from 18 feet. The load capacities of these machines range from five thousand pounds to twelve thousand pounds.
All-terrain forklifts rely on all-wheel steering to deliver better maneuverability and stability. Thanks to steering features including power-shift transmission, the operator can maneuver the machine in excellent proximity to the work location.
More recently, Telehandler forklift models have included additional features that incorporate the latest in ergonomics. Spacious cabs and tilted steering are some of the items redesigned for the ultimate comfort and productive features. Increasingly, these types of ergonomic features are in demand at worksites as they have been shown to improve productivity by decreasing operator repetitive stress injuries and operator fatigue.
The majority of telehandler forklifts are operated by a single joystick. The joystick is responsible for the hydraulic system and the boom operations.
Telehandler forklifts can also be equipped with non-marking tires which allow them to be used in other applications such as the installation of signs and billboards as well as maintenance on buildings and stadiums.
Rotating Telehandler or Roto Telescopic Handler Forklifts
Roto telescopic handler forklifts or rotating telehandlers have numerous items in common with the standard telehandler model. Telehandlers are capable of rotating heavy-lift weights to tremendous heights. This unit’s added turntable and rotation flexibility increases the types of jobs it can complete. Rotating the forklift a complete three-hundred-and-sixty degrees creates a larger working location without the need of repositioning the forklift.
Because of this additional feature, rotating telehandlers often have a second joystick to allow operation of the rotation function apart from the lift function. Useful additional features may be added to your standard telehandler or rotating telehandler including 4WD, increased traction via minimized slip differential on the rear axle, and power-assist steering.
Of course, a machine that can rotate has extra safety considerations to understand. Rotating telehandler rough terrain models come with standard stabilizers to establish more safety while rotating loads back and forth. There are some rotating telehandlers that are designed to move heavy weights without stabilizers to reduce the time it takes to reposition the forklift for work in other areas of the jobsite.
The standard telehandler offers fixed cab components and rotator telehandlers are generally smaller in comparison. Therefore, rotator telehandler units can access smaller loads when compared to standard telehandler units. Load capacities for rotating telehandlers usually range between 4,000 and 10,000 pounds, with lift heights ranging from 15 to 80 feet.
Both telehandlers and rotator telehandlers can be used as a crane when fitted with a winch attachment. This means that these forklifts can sometimes allow a project to forego the need for a crane at the jobsite, saving time, expense and workspace.
Advancements for Rough Terrain Forklifts
Many attachments are currently available for rough terrain forklifts, such as booms, winches, rotating fork carriages and articulating booms. More rough terrain forklift attachments will be unleashed onto the market in future years thanks to their ability to make the forklift more multi-purpose than ever before.
The majority of advancements will be delivered as safety features built to enhance the rough terrain models. Some new safety features have already been developed such as automatic load restriction devices. By automatically weighing a load, these systems calculate the loads’ safe reach distance while taking the boom angle and its’ extension into account. An alarm will go off once the safe distance is reached. This alerts the operator that immediate adjustments need to be made to the boom angle, reach distance or load weight.
