Tower Crane Parts
Tower cranes allow the construction industry to make some wonderful structures. These cranes have been used to reach ever-increasing heights. Tower cranes provide the way to transport and raise materials, tools and building parts around a construction site. There are various components which assemble a tower crane once they are put together. Putting a tower crane together utilizes different pieces of construction machinery.
Base
The base of a tower crane is usually made from a steel unit. The units' base attaches to a custom pad made of concrete. This type of set-up provides the structure with stability. Overall, the construction should be engineered and built well in order to operate at optimum safety.
Mast
The mast on the tower crane provides the machine with its overall height. The mast is built out of individual steel parts which are connected together. The amount of sections determines the crane's height. Typically, a tower crane has a design that enables the mast to grow during construction by adding more parts as the building process goes on. This way the height of the crane can be specified, ensuring it has enough height to efficiently and safely perform the required work.
Slewing Unit/Top Climber
A slewing unit is located at the top of the mast. This unit houses the machines and the motor that allows the crane to rotate. A top climber is the piece of machinery which allows the mast to grow. The top climber is situated just underneath the slewing unit. Hydraulic rams in the top climber allow the slewing unit to be detached from the mast by raising it higher.
Boom
"Boom" is a term which specifically refers to the tower crane's working arm. The boom is made of steel sections connected together, that extend out from the top of the slewing unit, parallel to the ground. There is a trolley connected to the bottom which can extend the length of the boom. This particular trolley holds the hoisting mechanism.
