Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric lift trucks is provided by big industrial batteries that need to be charged frequently and maintained correctly. Safety procedures must always be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is very important to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is important for employees working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both clothes and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging area must be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the post must not be blocked and an injured worker should be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging area in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited near a battery and charging area. Never permit items such as matches or lighters to be used when somebody is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also has to be properly ventilated. The recharging process can release gas. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
