Driving a forklift is much more complex than driving a car. A forklift driver must be really trained and skilled in using a forklift. Operating a lift truck requires a high level of concentration. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration or also referred to as OSHA reports that 85 individuals die in forklift-related accidents each year year. Around 35,000 people are injured each year in accidents related to forklifts. Nearly half of operator deaths result from a forklift tip over.

Drivers need to be able to accurately estimate load weights in order to avoid the machinery from tipping over. The load weight in construction environments would often be posted on the load. If a concrete block weighs 16 kilograms, and the load consists of cubes containing 90 concrete blocks, the total weight of the load would be roughly 1,360 kilograms. When a load is wet, the driver will have to take more weight into consideration.

It could be dangerous if the driver makes poorly informed guesses as the loads actual weight and whether the machine could handle the load. If a driver cannot be sure about the weight of a load, he must ask for help from the supervisor.

Failure to pull up close enough to a building or raise a load using an extended boom can be one more cause of tip overs. To avoid tipping forklift, it is important to utilize the load chart. Even when a forklift does not actually tip over, a mishap has occurred when the back wheels come off the ground. This means the limitations of the forklift have been exceeded. Though damage may not be obvious, the rear axle can have been damaged upon hitting the ground.

It is also possible for lift trucks to tip even when not carrying a load. Unloaded forklifts can tip just after a driver has positioned a load on scaffolding using an extended boom. If the operator reverses the lift truck and turns suddenly while bringing the boom down, the center of gravity will be pushed to the edges of the forklift and a tip over can happen. An operator should always use the joysticks to retract and lower the fork.
